PV DC can charge the battery or invert to AC for loads. The battery can discharge to cover evening imports. Grid import/export still follows your meter and FiT plan. Some hybrids offer limited backup sockets or whole-home backup with extra hardware — read the fine print.
Federal battery discounts plus state schemes (VIC, QLD, SA, ACT contexts) made storage mainstream. A hybrid specified on day one avoids ripping out a brand-new string inverter later. Still compare AC-coupled retrofit pricing if you already own a healthy string unit.
Many hybrids do not automatically black-start the entire house. Backup may be limited to a critical loads board. If medical or fridge backup is the goal, demand a single-line diagram showing what stays online during an outage.
Hybrids must implement the approved export limit and protection settings. Battery charge from grid may be restricted on some networks or plans. Have the installer document the intended operating mode: self-consumption first, TOU arbitrage, or VPP-ready.
Round-trip battery losses plus inverter conversion losses both matter. Size PV and battery to your evening kWh, not to brochure maxima. A 10kW hybrid with a tiny battery can still export cheaply at noon if loads are low.
