Modern inverters manage maximum power point tracking, anti-islanding, earth-fault detection and communications. Many accept DNSP export-limit settings in firmware. If the inverter fails, generation stops even if panels are healthy — so warranty length, service networks and spare availability matter.
String inverters serve series strings from a central unit. Microinverters convert at the module. Hybrids add battery terminals and smarter energy management. Power optimisers sit between modules and a central inverter. Match topology to roof shade and battery plans rather than brochure buzzwords.
Use CEC-listed inverter models your DNSP accepts. An obscure import that is not listed can block STCs and connection approval. Ask installers to name the exact model, firmware pathway and whether it supports the export limit on your feeder.
Inverters are often sized near or slightly under array kWp (oversizing ratios vary by brand guidance and AS/NZS practice). Extreme undersizing clips sunny midday peaks; extreme oversizing wastes inverter headroom. Your designer should show expected clipping hours for your city's climate.
If storage is likely under the Cheaper Home Batteries Program (~$372/kWh usable), prefer a hybrid-capable platform or a documented retrofit path. Replacing a brand-new string-only inverter two years later is an expensive lesson.
