The aggregator sends a signal to discharge or hold your battery within agreed limits. Events often align with network peaks or high wholesale prices. Your household should retain a reserved state-of-charge for storms and dinner. If the contract is vague on overrides, assume you will lose some autonomy.
Monthly VPP credits look attractive until the linked retail plan raises import rates. Compare the full bill on Energy Made Easy (or state tools) against a stand-alone battery tariff. A $30 credit that costs $40 in higher usage rates is not a win.
Eligible inverters, batteries and internet uptime matter. Some VPPs lock you to specific brands. Confirm CEC-listed hardware, warranty treatment of extra cycles, and what happens if Wi-Fi drops during an event.
Federal ~$372/kWh usable support and state schemes (VIC Solar Homes battery pathway, QLD Battery Booster, SA Home Battery Scheme context, ACT Next Gen) can coexist with VPP enrolment subject to rules. Keep subsidy paperwork separate from VPP marketing claims on the quote.
If you work nights, have medical equipment, or simply want full control, skip VPP complexity. Self-consumption optimisation alone often justifies storage when evening tariffs are high and export is cheap or limited.
