Solar panel efficiency is the share of sunlight a module converts into electricity under test conditions. Higher efficiency packs more kWp into limited roof space — valuable on tight Australian urban roofs — but it is not the only predictor of bill savings. Temperature behaviour, shade design, inverter pairing and price per watt still decide outcomes.

Indicative 2026 pricing: a typical 6.6kW system often quotes around $5,000–$8,000 after the STC discount (metro installs often $5,000–$7,500; premium/regional can run higher). See our solar cost guide.

Residential modules commonly land around the high-teens to low-20% range depending on technology. A 22% panel produces more watts per square metre than an 18% panel of the same size. Compare efficiency alongside warranty and temperature coefficient.
Small roofs, strata setbacks, dormers and east-west constraints justify premium efficiency. Large unshaded farm sheds may do better buying more area of mid-efficiency modules at a lower $/W.
Australian roofs run hot. A panel with a gentler temperature coefficient can outperform a slightly higher STC efficiency rating on a 40°C February afternoon. Ask for both specs.
A high-efficiency array pointed at shade still loses. MPPT layout, string design and export limits often move annual kWh more than a 1% module efficiency gap.
Certificates scale with installed kW capacity, zone and deeming — not with whether panels are marketed as “ultra efficient.” A 6.6kW system is 6.6kW for STC purposes regardless of module count.
Normalise to kWp and expected annual kWh. CEC-accredited installers via MrSolar should explain why they chose a module tier for your roof rather than upselling efficiency for its own sake.
