You still have a DNSP connection for import/export, but a battery shifts energy across the day. Operating modes prioritise self-consumption, tariff arbitrage or backup reserves. It is not the same as off-grid autonomy.
DC-coupled hybrids charge batteries efficiently from PV. AC-coupled batteries retrofit beside existing string inverters. Both can be excellent; choose based on whether solar is new or already installed.
Panel STCs reduce PV cost; federal battery discounts and state schemes (VIC/QLD/SA/ACT contexts) reduce storage cost. Itemise each. A hybrid quote that hides subsidy assumptions cannot be compared fairly.
Batteries absorb energy that cannot be exported on constrained feeders. That is often the strongest suburban case for hybrids in Ausgrid, SAPN, Energex and other busy networks.
