Retailers publish windows that vary by state, network and plan — there is no single national timetable. Peak often clusters around late afternoon/evening; shoulder bridges the day; off-peak overnight is common but not universal. Solar’s best hours frequently land in cheaper import windows, which is why self-consumption still wins: you avoid buying expensive evening kWh later, not because midday imports were pricey.
Without a battery, your job is behavioural and automated: dishwashers, washing machines, pool pumps, controlled hot water and EV charging should chase generation. If the household is stubbornly evening-heavy (cooking, heating/cooling, entertainment), upsizing panels to export into a low FiT on a capped feeder is a weak fix. Measure first — interval data beats guesswork.
Charge from solar through the day; discharge into peak import windows. Confirm inverter schedules, whether a VPP can override your preferences, and how much usable kWh remains for backup. Federal Cheaper Home Batteries support (~$372/kWh usable where eligible) can improve the capital case — still model against your peak rate differential, not a generic national average.
Solar can make a flat plan look better or worse depending on residual evening imports. Some homes save more on flat rates with strong daytime self-use; others need TOU plus storage to crush peaks. If you can charge at home during generation hours, that kWh often beats both grid peak and mediocre FiTs. Overnight off-peak is the fallback when solar is insufficient or you only plug in after work. Smart chargers and vehicle scheduling matter as much as amperage bragging rights.
Capped export means surplus you cannot sell should be used or stored.
